How to choose an SPF cream for the face: SPF, PA and how much

SPF cream is the last step of the morning routine. Korean sun creams often have a light texture, so they are easy to use every day, even under makeup. This guide explains what to look for when choosing and how to apply it so the protection works as stated on the pack.

What SPF and PA mean

SPF shows protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. PA with pluses (PA+ to PA++++) is a UVA rating used in Asia: the more pluses, the higher the UVA protection. For everyday use in the city, SPF30–SPF50+ is the most common choice.

How to choose by skin type

  • Oily and combination skin – light, fast-absorbing textures that leave no greasy shine.
  • Dry skin – hydrating formulas with panthenol or hyaluronic acid.
  • Sensitive skin – gentle formulas with soothing ingredients such as centella or heartleaf.

How much to apply and when to reapply

  1. In the morning, after your moisturiser, apply enough – roughly a two-finger-length strip for the face.
  2. Do not forget your neck and ears.
  3. When you are outdoors, reapply every two hours, and after sweating or swimming.
  4. If you use retinol or AHA/BHA acids, SPF in the morning is especially important.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need SPF in winter and on cloudy days? UVA rays reach the skin through clouds too, so daily protection is useful all year round.

Is the SPF in makeup enough? Makeup is usually applied too thinly, so it is worth using a separate SPF cream and a compact powder with SPF to top up protection during the day.

Not sure which one suits you? Use the routine builder – it suggests an SPF step for your skin type.
